Along the banks of the river when the water is calm, rock and water combine to create the magic of River Totems. Within this sacred geometry of the elements, angels, fairies, gnomes and animal spirits emerge. While one person may see the face of a bear, another may see the wings of a fairy.

My vision came to be on a beautiful day in the northern Sierras while lying on a rock. As I glanced out across the river, I noticed abstract faces appearing in the seam of the reflection. These faces reminded me of totem poles, and I was fascinated and moved by this gift from the river. Having had this vision and feeling the need to share it, the very next day I brought my camera and tripod to explore the rivers and their magic.

I have always loved the way a photograph can capture the emotion embedded in a moment. My studies in photography have been through workshops and apprenticeships with a variety of professional photographers. Since childhood I have sensed the power of nature and the interrelation of all things; as a photographer I am inspired to capture this on film. Like the confluence of two rivers, my love of photography and my love of nature began to flow together.

The mystery and joy of these River Totems reflect the unique spirit of each river. I hope you enjoy this perspective and that you are as touched by these faces of nature as I am.
